Everything AuthorChecklist.com does

Every explanation, directory record, deadline, guide, and glossary term on this site is free to read without an account. The list below is everything the site does, grouped by what you are trying to get done, and each line says whether it is free, comes with a book, or is bought separately.

What the labels mean

Free
Free to read or use, with no account, no payment, and no end date.
With a book ($40 once)
Your Author Profile is free. A book in it is $40, once per book, and that covers every edition and format of the title.
Add-on
A separate one-time purchase: a collaborator seat at $20 per person, or work you ask us to do for you.
Professional Search
A paid pass for people who use the whole database as a research tool. It never comes with a book.

Plan the book

Understand what has to happen around your book, in order, and keep your own copy of it.

  • Thirteen categories of work around a book, each step explained: what it is, when it matters, who usually handles it, and how to tell it got done.

  • Your checklist progress

    With a book ($40 once)

Mark steps done for one book, set dates, owners, and reminders, and narrow the list to what your publishing path actually needs.

  • Every term the industry uses, explained in plain English, with the acronyms spelled out.

  • Guides

    Free

Longer reads on the parts of publishing that need more than a checklist step.

  • The numbers and records a book needs, from the International Standard Book Number (ISBN) onward, with what each one is for and where to get it.

  • The records that say who you are across catalogs and search engines, and how to claim each one.

  • Type an International Standard Book Number (ISBN) and see what the public catalogs say about it, with no account.

  • Your calendar

    Free

Every date on your books in one month grid or agenda, with a feed your own calendar app can subscribe to.

  • Email templates

    Free

Ready wording for review requests, library questions, award entries, and notes to your publisher, filled in with the book facts you have saved.

  • Book setup, filled in for you

    With a book ($40 once)

Add a book by its ISBN or title and we offer the title, publisher, publication date, and genres from Open Library for you to accept or change.

  • A book published more than two years ago is added to your Author Profile at no charge, with its pages, records, and checklist progress.

Get it into the world

The people and programs you send the book to, and a record of what you sent and what came back.

  • Who runs each program, what it costs, what it is eligible for, and when the window opens and closes, with the official link and the day we last checked it.

  • The outlets librarians and booksellers read, with each one's submission route, lead time, and rules in their own words.

  • Four directories of the people an author pitches, with what they work on and how they want to be approached. Searching by name or place is free for everybody.

  • Submissions

    With a book ($40 once)

Every award and review submission for your book: what you sent, on what day, what it cost, and what came back, as a page and a spreadsheet.

  • Your outreach log

    With a book ($40 once)

Every agent, editor, publisher, reviewer, or bookstore you wrote to yourself, with the date, the answer, and what to do next.

  • Suggested for this book

    With a book ($40 once)

The awards, review outlets, and agents whose own published rules fit the facts of your book, with the reason for each suggestion.

  • The records, pages, and plan for one book, done for you and recorded in your Author Profile, as a package or one step at a time.

Be found

The pages, records, and identifiers that let readers, librarians, journalists, and search engines find you.

  • A page for you, your books, your bio, and your press links, yours to edit and publish, and it costs nothing.

  • A page for each book

    With a book ($40 once)

One public page per book with its editions, identifiers, reviews, buy links, and news.

  • Media kit

    With a book ($40 once)

Cover art, your bio in three lengths, and the facts a journalist or event organizer asks for, on one link you can send.

  • One-page identity sheet

    With a book ($40 once)

Every settled fact about the book, printable, for the forms that ask for all of it at once.

  • Automatic checks

    With a book ($40 once)

We ask the Library of Congress, Open Library, Google Books, and Apple Books what they hold about your ISBN and say where they disagree with your own record.

  • Authors named as clients on their agencies' own pages, one listing each, with the books we could confirm. Free to read, and yours to claim if it is you.

  • Library systems by state, population served, and number of branches, with each one's own purchase suggestion or author submission policy.

  • Your publishing records

    With a book ($40 once)

The identifiers, catalog records, confirmations, costs, and results for one book, kept together and exportable.

Grow your readers

What is happening in publishing right now, and the places your next readers are already looking.

  • Deals reported to us, who represented them, and who bought them, with a form for reporting your own.

  • Headlines out of the publishing press, straight from each publication's own feed, with links and nothing written by us.

  • The reviews the trade press published today and over the last two weeks, on their own page.

  • A weekly news email

    Free

The week's headlines from the sources you choose, sent once a week, with a stop link in every one.

  • The magazines, newsletters, and sites that cover publishing, with what each costs and who it is for.

  • Writing associations and member organizations, with membership cost, scope, and what belonging actually gets you.

  • Your media contacts

    Free

The people who should be able to reach you, listed on your author page so a journalist or bookseller writes to the right address.

  • Reviews and news on your book page

    With a book ($40 once)

Add the reviews your book received and the news about it, each with its source, so one page carries the evidence.

  • Your royalty websites

    Free

The addresses where your publishers show you your sales, kept with the books they cover. We store no login of any kind.

Work with your team

Everyone helping with the book, working from the same list instead of separate spreadsheets.

  • Invite an editor, publicist, or anyone else to the books you choose, $20 once per person, and decide what they can edit.

  • Owners, statuses, and comments

    With a book ($40 once)

Say who has each step, what it is waiting on, and what was agreed, on the step itself instead of in an email thread.

  • Your publishing contacts

Your publisher, editor, agent, publicist, and everybody else on the book, with what each one handles.
