Why it matters
For an independent or self-published book, these programs are often the only award route open, and some carry weight with librarians and booksellers who specialize in independent titles. Early deadlines are typically months before the final deadline and cost less, so identifying the programs early is the difference between a considered entry and a rushed, more expensive one.

Independent-publishing awards are programs open to small presses, university presses, hybrid publishers, and self-published authors, and often closed to the large trade houses. Established examples include the IBPA Book Award (formerly the Benjamin Franklin Award), the Foreword INDIES, the Independent Publisher Book Awards (IPPY), the Next Generation Indie Book Awards, and the Eric Hoffer Book Award. Each has its own definition of "independent", its own category list, and its own fee structure.
Nearly all of these programs charge an entry fee, often per category, with lower fees at an early deadline. That is not a mark against them; it is how they are funded. It does mean you should treat each one as a purchase and evaluate it as such: who judges, who sees the results, what past winners look like, and whether the categories fit your book.
This item is strongly recommended for hybrid and self-published titles and for small presses. Traditionally published authors at large houses are usually not eligible and can skip it, though authors at small independent presses should check.
Read the current rules on each program's own site. Fees, deadlines, and eligibility windows change every cycle, and the awards directory on this site records what was verified and when.
Common mistakes
- Assuming every program that says "indie" accepts self-published books; some mean small presses only.
- Missing the early deadline and paying the higher fee for the same entry.
- Entering five categories in one program because it was cheaper per category.
- Judging a program by its name rather than by its judges, audience, and past results.
