Platform
Google Books Partner Center
The dashboard where a publisher or self-publisher submits book files, details, and preview settings to Google.
Why it matters to you
Whoever holds this account controls the details, preview percentage, and price for your title, and nobody else can edit them, including you when the account belongs to your publisher. Traditionally and hybrid published authors normally ask whether the book is in a partner account, whose it is, and what preview percentage is set, and normally will not be given a login. If you publish the book yourself and want to reach Google Books and Google Play, you can open an account or reach Google through an aggregator, but opening a second account for a title that already lives in someone else's creates duplicate records that are tedious to untangle. Find out who holds the account so the first correction goes to someone who can act on it.
What it is
The Partner Center (Google Play Books Partner Center) is the dashboard where a publisher or self-publisher submits books to Google. Through it a partner uploads PDF or EPUB files, enters bibliographic details, sets how much of the book can be previewed on Google Books, and, in supported countries, sells the ebook or audiobook on Google Play with pricing, pre-orders, and promotional scheduling. It also supports bulk edits by spreadsheet, additional users on an account, and sales reporting.
Google's help says the platform is for authors and publishers who want their books found on Google Books and sold on Google Play. Account holders must be at least eighteen and able to enter a contract with Google, and need a Google account.
What it identifies or controls
The metadata, files, preview settings, prices, and territories for every title in that account. This is the upstream source for a Google Books record when the book was supplied by a partner. Whoever holds the account controls the listing; nobody else can edit it, including the author when the account belongs to the publisher.
What you should do
First find out who controls the title. If you have a publisher, ask whether the book is in a Partner Center account, whose, and what preview percentage is set. You will not get a login; you ask for changes and verify them on Google Books.
If you self-publish and want Google Books and Google Play coverage, you can open an account and add the book yourself, or reach Google through an aggregator that distributes there. Do not open a second account for a title that already lives in someone else's; duplicate submissions create duplicate records that are tedious to untangle. Check the supported-countries list before assuming Play sales are available where you are.
How to verify it
- Ask the publisher, or check your own account, for the title's status: live, in review, or not submitted.
- Search each ISBN on Google Books and confirm the record and preview match the account settings.
- If you hold the account, open the title, check the bibliographic fields and preview settings, and confirm the current files are uploaded.
- Log any mismatch and, if the account is not yours, send the correction to the account holder.
Commonly confused with
The Partner Center is not Google Books itself and not something an author claims like Amazon Author Central. There is no author page to claim; there is only a publisher account. It is separate from Google Scholar, from Google's Library Project scans, and from Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing.
