Audit every retailer listing

Audit Kobo listing

If you have an ebook or audiobook, check the Kobo listing at launch, since Kobo reaches readers outside the United States and supplies several bookstore-branded ebook stores.

Why it matters

Kobo is where a good share of readers in Canada, the United Kingdom, and Australia buy ebooks, and where several independent bookstores send their ebook customers. A missing or wrong listing there is invisible from the United States and easy to overlook.

How to do it

The full walkthrough

Kobo is an ebook and audiobook retailer with a strong presence in Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and parts of Europe, and it powers the ebook stores of several bookstore chains and independent bookstore programs. For a book with readers outside the United States, Kobo can be a larger share of digital sales than its American profile suggests.

Listings arrive from the publisher's feed, an aggregator, or directly from Kobo Writing Life, Kobo's self-publishing portal. The audit covers the usual fields: title, subtitle, contributors, cover, description, price by territory, publication date, and series. Kobo displays prices by country, so check that territorial pricing looks sensible and that the book is available in the countries you expect.

Corrections go back through whatever route reached Kobo: a publisher's feed, an aggregator the press uses, or Kobo Writing Life or an aggregator if you published the book yourself. If your ebook is exclusive to another platform it will not be on Kobo at all, which is a decision rather than an error.

Check at launch.

Common mistakes

  • Skipping Kobo because it is smaller in the United States.
  • Not checking territorial prices, which can be set oddly by currency conversion.
  • Forgetting that an exclusivity choice elsewhere removes the book from Kobo.
  • Reporting a feed error to Kobo instead of the publisher or aggregator.

What done looks like

  • Ebook and audiobook listed with correct details.
  • Availability and pricing checked for the main territories you expect readers in.
  • Series information correct if applicable.
  • The Kobo link included in your canonical buy links.
  • Errors reported to the controlling party and logged.
