Audit every retailer listing

Audit Bookshop.org listing and author association

Check that every print edition appears correctly on Bookshop.org and that your books are grouped under the right author. Decide separately whether an affiliate page belongs in your sales plan.

Why it matters

Independent bookstores are the accounts most likely to hand-sell a book, and linking to Bookshop.org is a small, visible way to support them while giving readers a place to buy. A listing that is missing or split across two author pages wastes that goodwill.

How to do it

The full walkthrough

Bookshop.org is an online bookstore that channels a share of every sale to independent bookstores. Many authors prefer to link to it rather than to a single large retailer, and independent bookstores appreciate it. Its listings are built from wholesaler data, so the book will usually appear once it is available through the wholesale channel; the audit is to confirm it did, and that the listing is correct.

Check each print format's page for title, subtitle, contributors, cover, description, price, and publication date. Then look at the author association: Bookshop.org groups books by author name, and a variant spelling or a missing middle initial can split your books across two author pages. Bookshop.org also offers an affiliate program through which authors can create a profile page, curate lists, and earn a commission on sales made through their links, in addition to the store's share. It is free to join and is the usual way to build an author storefront there.

The listing is built from wholesaler data, so corrections go back to whoever controls the feed: your publisher, the press, or your own print platform. The affiliate profile is yours in every case. And if the book does not appear at all, that is a distribution problem rather than a Bookshop.org one.

Check at launch, when the listing should be live.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming the book is there without looking.
  • Author pages split by a name variant, discovered only when a reader cannot find the new book.
  • Expecting an ebook listing; Bookshop.org's focus is print, and any digital offering has its own rules.
  • Skipping the affiliate profile and losing both the storefront and the commission.

What done looks like

  • Each print format listed correctly at launch.
  • All your books on one author page under one consistent name.
  • An affiliate profile created, with the new book and any lists added.
  • Bookshop.org links included among your canonical buy links.
  • Any listing error reported to the publisher or platform and logged.
