Audit every retailer listing

Audit Barnes & Noble listing for each format

Check the Barnes & Noble product page for each format of your book, since its data comes from a different feed than Amazon's and can carry different errors.

Why it matters

B&N is the second retail page most readers see and the one bookstore customers are sent to when a physical store does not have the book. Errors there are not caught by fixing Amazon. Checking both is the only way to know the book looks right where people buy it.

How to do it

The full walkthrough

Barnes & Noble (B&N) is the largest bookstore chain in the United States, and its website lists most books in print whether or not the stores stock them. Its product pages are built from publisher, distributor, and wholesaler data, and from its own ebook platform for digital editions. Because that data arrives by a different path than Amazon's, the two sites often disagree, and a clean Amazon page tells you nothing about B&N.

The audit is the same discipline: for each format, check title, subtitle, contributors, cover, description, publication date, price, page count, and whether the formats are linked. Note the availability status, which on B&N can show a title as unavailable or special-order even when it is fully distributed, and which matters for whether stores can order it for customers.

Print data and ebook data arrive by different routes, so corrections do too. Find out who supplies each one, which means a publisher's feed, the press's platform, your print-on-demand platform's wholesale route, or whichever route you used to reach B&N's ebook store, and fix each at its source.

Audit 30 to 60 days before launch and again at launch.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming a correct Amazon page means B&N is correct.
  • Ignoring an unavailable or special-order status that signals a distribution gap.
  • Reporting a feed error to B&N customer service, which cannot change publisher data.
  • Forgetting the ebook edition, which arrives by a separate route.

What done looks like

  • Each format's B&N page checked against your Book Identity Sheet.
  • Formats linked and availability status sensible for the date.
  • Errors reported to the party that controls the feed, with the date, and logged.
  • The audit repeated at launch.
