The Pulitzer Prizes in Letters recognize books first published in the United States during the previous calendar year. The book categories are Fiction, History, Biography, Memoir or Autobiography, Poetry, and General Nonfiction, with a separate prize for Drama.
Entries are filed through the Pulitzer entry portal during the fall after the publication year. In recent cycles either the author or the publisher could enter, with a handling fee per entry; confirm the current rules on the requirements page. The book itself, not a nomination from a third party, is what the jury reads.
Winners and finalists are announced together in the spring. Only the winner and the two finalists in each category are named; there is no longlist.
