The National Indie Excellence Awards are a paid-entry contest for self-published authors and independent, small, and university presses, with more than 150 categories. Books from the six largest trade houses are not eligible. Winners and finalists receive digital seals that appear on independent covers and author websites, though trade buyers and review outlets pay the program less attention. If a smaller traditional press published your book, check whether it wants to enter; self-published and hybrid authors normally enter and pay directly, one fee per category.

The National Indie Excellence Awards (NIEA) has recognized self-published and independently published books since 2005. The 21st annual competition offers more than 150 categories, from fiction and memoir to cookbooks, children's books, and specialized nonfiction.
Entry is open to small presses, mid-size independent publishers, university presses, and self-published authors. Books published by Hachette, HarperCollins, Macmillan, Penguin, Random House, or Simon and Schuster are not eligible. Only English-language books published in 2025, 2026, or before March 31, 2027 may enter, and the book must be available for sale by the deadline. Print books and, new this year, ebooks are accepted.
Print entries cost $85 per category ($75 early bird through October 15) and require one physical copy per category; ebook entries cost $70 per category and are uploaded. All entries must be submitted and postmarked by March 31, 2027, and winners and finalists are notified in June 2027.
Why it may matter
NIEA is one of the broad independent programs whose seals show up regularly on self-published covers and author websites. Its audience is largely other independent authors and the readers who follow indie award lists; trade buyers and review outlets pay it less attention. The explicit exclusion of the five largest trade houses means an independently published book is not competing against them.

Early bird pricing runs through October 15 and applies to print entries only; the rules page gives the date without a year, and October 15, 2026 is the only reading consistent with the March 2027 final deadline. The publication window closes at March 31, 2027, the same day as the entry deadline, so a book due in April 2027 waits for the next cycle.
