The National Book Critics Circle Awards are chosen by a board of working book critics, in six categories covering fiction, nonfiction, biography, autobiography, criticism, and poetry, plus prizes for a first book and for a book in translation. Review editors, booksellers, and librarians follow the list because critics rather than paying entrants pick it. There is no entry form and no fee, so nothing is submitted. The National Book Critics Circle (NBCC) Awards are chosen by a board of working book critics. Six categories cover Autobiography, Biography, Criticism, Fiction, Nonfiction, and Poetry, and the organization also gives the John Leonard Prize for a first book and the Gregg Barrios Book in Translation Prize.
Books published in the United States between January 1 and December 31 of the award year are eligible, and authors may be from any country. Translations, story and essay collections, and self-published books are considered. The board nominates and votes on titles, and the wider NBCC membership is polled for candidates.
Finalists are announced in January and winners each March at the NBCC ceremony.
Why it may matter
The NBCC list is read closely by review editors, booksellers, and librarians because it reflects what critics, rather than publishers or paying entrants, thought were the year's best books. A finalist placement tends to bring a second round of review attention and stronger library ordering. Because there is no entry form or fee, the only practical step is making sure the book reaches critics in the first place.

Authors sometimes search for an NBCC entry form. There is none: the frequently asked questions page states plainly that there is no application for the award. What exists is a publisher registration on the NBCC site for sending books to the judges. Publishers normally handle that, and an author can ask whether it has been done. Nonfiction excludes cookbooks, self-help, reference, picture books, and children's books. The awards process page (bookcritics.org/awards/process/ (opens in a new tab)), read September 16, 2026, states that the NBCC does not accept official submissions and charges no fees: books published in English in the United States between January 1 and December 31 are eligible, publishers and publicists may send copies through the portal (preferably by November 1 and no later than December 1), and the board votes on the day of the March ceremony. There is nothing to enter, so this record carries no cycle.
