The James Beard Book Awards are the book portion of the James Beard Foundation Media Awards. They recognize cookbooks and other nonfiction food or beverage books published in the United States, in fourteen categories such as Baking and Desserts, Beverage with Recipes, Beverage without Recipes, Bread, Food Issues and Advocacy, General, International, Literary Writing, Professional and Restaurant, Reference, History, and Scholarship, Single Subject, U.S. Foodways, Vegetable-Focused Cooking, and Visuals, plus an Emerging Voice award and a Hall of Fame.
Entries come through an annual open call. The Open Call for the 2027 James Beard Awards runs September 30 to November 30, 2026, and each Media Awards entry carries an $85 fee, with waivers available on request. Entries are filed through an online awards platform.
Nominees are announced in the spring and winners at the ceremony in June.
Why it may matter
In food publishing, cookbook buyers at independent bookstores, food media, and culinary event organizers act on a Beard nomination, and it stays on a book's cover for years. The categories are specific, so the main decision is which one the book actually fits. The fee is low compared with most paid-entry programs, and a waiver can be requested.
