The Hugo Awards are voted on by members of the World Science Fiction Convention (Worldcon) and administered under the constitution of the World Science Fiction Society (WSFS). Book-relevant categories include Best Novel (40,000 words or more), Best Novella, Best Novelette, Best Short Story, Best Series, Best Graphic Story or Comic, and Best Related Work for nonfiction, alongside editor, artist, dramatic presentation, and fan categories.
There is no submission. Works are eligible in the year after they are first published, and they can be published anywhere in the world in any language; electronic publication counts the same as print and self-published works qualify. Members of the current Worldcon (and, for nominating, the previous one) nominate up to five works per category between roughly January and March, the shortlist is announced in early April, and final voting runs into the summer with winners announced at the convention.
Anyone can take part by buying a Worldcon membership, which is what gives the voting rights. Authors and publishers can supply eligibility information to the convention but cannot enter a work.
Why it may matter
A Hugo finalist listing tends to be noted by booksellers, libraries, and genre media for years, and the finalist and winner lists are reported well outside the convention. Since only Worldcon members nominate, an author's practical work is making sure the book's eligibility year and category are clear, and that readers in the community know it exists before nominations open.

Each year's Worldcon publishes its own nomination and voting dates. The 2026 Worldcon is LAcon V in Anaheim, California, and the 2027 Worldcon is in Montreal. Word-count boundaries decide the fiction category, so an author with a long novella or short novel should check where the work falls before anyone nominates it. WSFS does not endorse the third-party recommendation lists that circulate during nomination season. For the 2026 Hugo Awards, thehugoawards.org (opens in a new tab) listed nominations open from February 12 to March 28, 2026, voting closed August 8, 2026, and the ceremony on August 30, 2026 at LAcon V. As of September 16, 2026 the 2027 nomination dates had not been posted there. There is nothing to enter, so this record carries no cycle.
