Every label is a fact from the official rules, never a judgment about whether the award is worth entering. How we describe awards.
The Eric Hoffer Book Award is run by Hopewell Publications in Titusville, New Jersey, for books from small, academic, and independent presses, including self-published titles. Twenty-four categories cover fiction, nonfiction, poetry, children's, and specialized subjects, alongside press-type honors (micro, small, academic, and self-published) and special distinctions: the Montaigne Medal for thought-provoking books, the da Vinci Eye for cover art, the First Horizon Award for first books, and the Medal Provocateur for poetry.
Books released or copyrighted within the last two years are eligible, and older titles may enter the Legacy Fiction and Legacy Nonfiction categories. Books must be primarily in English; international entries are accepted. Anyone, including the author, may register a book, and registration is open all year.
The registration fee is $60 for early registrations and $75 after the early date ($45 for chapbooks). The postmark deadline is January 21 each year and all materials must arrive by January 31. Results are announced in April and May, with a $7,500 grand prize.
Why it may matter
The Hoffer is a long-running fixture of the small-press calendar, and its grand prize is one of the larger cash awards available to independently published books. Its results are followed in the independent-publishing community and by the review site it runs alongside the award. The special distinctions, particularly the First Horizon Award for debut authors and the da Vinci Eye for design, give a well-produced small-press book more than one way to place.

Worth knowing
Our reading, not a rule the organization published. We judge an award on the rubric in how we describe awards.
The Hoffer site lists two early-discount dates: the home page says December 10, 2026 and the registration form says postmarked by December 14. Use the earlier date to be safe. January 21 is a postmark deadline; the harder cutoff is January 31, when everything must have arrived. Winners are announced after April 30.
